A problem with digital history

mancomputerThat digital history is subject to the same problems as both digital things and history starts it necessarily at a disadvantage. It has to present very good arguments for being more useful than existing historical methods, for example, so that the disadvantages brought to history by its digital nature are outweighed by the advantages. In so far as using digital tools simply makes it harder to do history, rather than offering something that we can’t do now (and is very advantageous to the field), it is problematic.

If the disadvantages are only outweighed by enthusiasm, digital history will find little uptake in the field.
